The tip size, or tip opening, is the distance between your reed and the tip of your mouthpiece. This affects the airflow from your mouth into your mouthpiece. You can choose whichever tip opening suits you the best, however often players who desire certain sounds will get particular openings.
The smaller tip sizes will generally be easier to blow through, however, this is usually at the sacrifice of expressivity. These are popular amongst students and classical musicians. Larger tip openings are more difficult to blow through but have greater projection and expressivity. These tend to be more popular with jazz and rock musicians.
